On the occasion of the inauguration of the Institut de Mécanique Statistique de la Turbulence (IMST) in Marseille, Professor Alexandre Favre has organized two international colloquiua devoted to turbulence.

The first colloquium, entitled ‘Mécanique de la Turbulence' (Mechanics of Turbulence), was held from August 28th to September 2nd 1961.
The proceedings were published by CNRS in Colloques Internationaux du CNRS, 108, 1962 (copyright CNRS).
Most papers are in English, besides those of Alexandre Favre, Andreï Nikolaïevitch Kolmogorov and Jean Bass which are in French and Russian.

We are very thankful to Romain Nguyen van yen and Keith Moffatt for translating from French to English the introduction of the first proceedings, and to George Khujadze for scanning the text.

The following papers were written by journalists from the three main newspapers published in Marseille in the sixties: Le Provençal (left wing), Le Méridional (right wing) and La Marseillaise (communist).

Those papers presented the two successive colloquia that Prof. Alexandre Favre was organizing in Marseile, from August 28th to September 9th 1961, and explained to the layman the issues that were discussed there.

It is interesting to also read some of the news which happened during those two weeks: a Soviet nuclear bomb test, the plot against de Gaulle, a flood in Marseille following two months of drought...

Those papers have been scanned by Michel Coantic, Marie Farge and Kai Schneider at the library l'Arsenal in Marseille.
